Why MACROS Matter Most - Your Foundation For Success!
Frustrated...Having given up for the umpteenth time. 

That is how I would describe the clients that come to me asking for diet advice because NOTHING has worked and they finally want to get rid of the weight and change their body composition FOR GOOD!

Most of them feel like they've been pulling their hair out trying to figure out what to do...And the worst part is...

They feel like they HAVE been eating healthy.

They've watched their calorie intake AND they've focused on whole, natural foods.
But they still haven't gotten the results they feel they deserve.

So when nothing is working...what do we try and do?!

We do MORE! We cut our calories even lower and restrict the foods we eat even further.

No wonder we associate dieting with misery!!!

But it doesn't have to be that way.

Because there is one essential piece we don't often realize we are missing...that foundation to the pyramid of nutrition success that we are ignoring...

MACROS!

Macros make up all of the foods we eat - they are the nutrients we need in large quantities aka protein, carbs and fat.

And if those macros are out of whack, we may not get the results we want even if we are in a calorie deficit AND focusing on whole, natural foods. 

So now you may be thinking..."Ok so you're telling me I need to cut out carbs."

NOPE! 

No macro is evil and needs to be cut out! 

Actually, I've found that the real secret to dialing in your macros is focusing on PROTEIN!

And guess what?! 

Protein is usually what our diet is most deficient in! Heck...the standard diet these days only recommends 20% of our calories come from protein!

But why is protein so key?
3 Reasons PROTEIN Is Key!
If your ready to look leaner and feel full and energized, you need to make sure you're eating enough protein.

We always focus on cutting something out when we go on a diet. 

But what if the reason you weren't getting results was because you were focused on cutting more out instead of adding one specific thing in!?

And that one specific thing you need to add in is PROTEIN and here are the 3 reasons why...
Protein is made up of amino acids aka the building blocks of muscle tissue. If you want to grow stronger and look leaner, you need to get enough protein to build, repair and even MAINTAIN your muscle tissue!

When you workout, you break down muscle tissue. To help your body repair and grow stronger, you need to get it the fuel it needs. Protein is that fuel and key to getting the results you work so hard for in the gym!

Plus, more lean muscle mass means you’ll burn more calories even while at rest, helping you lose weight FASTER and look leaner and stronger!
Protein has a high thermogenic effect meaning you actually burn more calories to process protein and use it as fuel.

Because protein has a higher thermogenic effect than carbs or fat, eating about 40% of your calories from protein will make it harder to gain fat and easier to lose weight! Studies have even shown protein to have a thermogenic effect 5 times greater than carbs or fat!

Studies of thermogenesis have also shown that one of the most important roles protein plays in body weight regulation is due to the fact that it increases feelings of satiety aka feeling full!
Protein helps keep you feeling fuller for longer and energized throughout the day!

All too often diets make us cut our calories ridiculous low. Not only do you NOT need to do that, but by also making 40% of your calories come from protein, you’ll feel fuller for longer. Protein increases feelings of satiety which helps with body weight regulation.

Aka you’ll lose weight because you won’t be craving more food constantly and you won’t feel like you are constantly starving, which…let’s be honest…generally leads to us falling off our diet and binging!

Feeling full helps promote adherence to your diet long term AND helps keep you energized!

So protein is not only key to you getting results from your workouts, but also feeling fuller and having an easier time losing body fat!
It's Not Just Calories In Vs. Calories Out!
Quality Matters!
Have you ever measured out a food and thought....

"THAT'S ALL I GET!?! But that's so many calories for like a BITE!"

Yup...That often happens with highly processed foods that have horrible macro ratios!

And it's also part of the reason why we can feel like we are starving even after eating a ton of calories.

But when we first dial in our macros and THEN focus on how many calories we should be eating, we realize one of two things...

A. You realize you can consume WAY MORE than you are actually eating and by bumping your calories you get better results.
B. You may think you need way more calories than you actually do to feel full BECAUSE focusing on protein keeps you feeling fuller for so much freaking longer! And it doesn’t have the energy spikes and lows of fueling yourself based on just carbs!

So after macros, you need to focus on your caloric intake.

THEN after that, focus on the QUALITY of your calories.
Blah blah blah we all know whole natural foods are better for us...
There is no denying how important the QUALITY of your calories is to getting results.

But I've now worked with clients around the globe and I can tell you one thing for sure...most of us LOVE...did I say LOVE!?...processed crap.

Whether you're a sweet or salty person, there is some delicious processed treat most of us can't live without.

Let’s face it. There is a reason they make it that way.

Cause it tastes F****** DELICIOUS.
If you’re one of those weirdos who doesn’t like anything processed, I salute you. Huge fist bump!

But to those of us who aren’t that way, trying to only eat whole, natural foods and never get to indulge in the foods we love is just a recipe for disaster. 

It leads us to feeling deprived, which can lead to a binge, and then guilt, and then more binging...you know...that horrible yo-yo dieting cycle!

So instead of trying to just avoid all of the foods you love and make yourself miserable, why not find a balance? A balance that can be a true LIFESTYLE.

This is why first dialing in your macros is so key.

By focusing on your macro ratio, you help yourself eliminate enough crap to be healthy AND get results while still leaving in enough of the foods you love to make it SUSTAINABLE.

And by focusing first on the ratios, you don’t so much think about the fact that you are “cutting things out.”

NOPE!
 
Instead you are focused on what you need to ADD IN to hit the ratios while still being able to include, and even tweak, the recipes you love!

That shift in how you view your diet is key...from one where you are constantly depriving yourself to instead one where you are adding things in and finding a balance!

It is what creates LASTING RESULTS.

And think about it…If you focus on whole, natural foods 80% of the time and 20% of the time you eat crap, you’re still consistently going to get results because you are consistently doing the RIGHT things.

And you are going to ENJOY what you are doing which is going to help you build a lifestyle.

If instead you tried to do 100% clean and then were constantly “falling off your diet,” which let’s face it means basically eating 100% crap, you probably won’t over time even come close to that 80/20 rule.

So that is why after focusing on macros and your caloric intake, I say start to dial in the quality of your calories, remembering you can still keep in some “crap” and ENJOY what you are eating!

Because I have to admit...I'm a person who likes ice cream and pizza and...well all that processed crap!

I just found a way to make tweaks to recipes so that they still feel like indulgences BUT I hit my macros and get the results I want!

We create a diet that doesn't allow for us to enjoy life. To have flexibility. Heck, to enjoy meals even with our family and friends!

When we diet and deprive ourselves, all we do is make ourselves MISERABLE.

But How Can It Be That Simple?
What About Supplements And Meal Timing?
OMG your muscle will melt if you don't eat every 2 hours!

What a load of BS!

You know what's funny? We are all in search of this easy, QUICK FIX. This MAGIC PILL.

But then when we actually try and diet we end up picking the most complicated, convoluted diet we can find!

A diet with crazy rules and tons of supplements. A diet that makes us micromanage every detail, freak out about meal timing and cycle daily exactly what we eat.
We pick the most freaking complicated thing we can find!

Because while we want a quick fix, we also believe that if something is too simple, it can't work.
BUT SIMPLE WORKS WHEN YOU FOCUS ON THE RIGHT THINGS!
The SECRET to all of this working is MACROS. 

If you hit those ratios at the end of the day, you can eat Paleo, Vegan, Vegetarian...You can eat 20 meals a day or 1 large meal at night. You can do intermittent fasting or follow a traditional 3 meals a day plan.

All of that can work if you keep it simple and hit the ratios for the day.

Don't get bogged down in the little details that don't matter...like honestly SUPPLEMENTS.

Supplements are just that SUPPLEMENTS. They can be additions to our diet that help, but ONLY if everything else...and I mean EVERYTHING ELSE...is already dialed in.

So don't get overwhelmed and make things overly complicated! Focus on those macros!
Ok...I'll Focus On Macros...But I DON'T Want To Track!
You can't eat intuitively.

Sorry 99% of us can't to start. As children we could. We listened to our bodies.

But somewhere along the way stress, fun, boredom, fatigue, hormones (ladies you know what I'm talking about!), and heck...simply the fact that we realized some foods taste really really good...got in the way of our ability to actually LISTEN to our bodies.
So right now, for most of us, if we tried to eat intuitively we wouldn't come close to the results we wanted.

Because we don't truly know any more what our bodies need.

That is why TRACKING is KEY.

Yea it's sucky to start trying to map things out sometimes. 

But guess what?

Like anything new, it GETS EASIER. It becomes a habit.

A habit that TEACHES you to eat intuitively so that you CAN start listening to your body.

Because intuitive eating for most of us is 100% something we have to RELEARN.

I know when I realized this, it took a huge weight off. It made me feel less weird that I stress ate and ate extra when I was tired or burnt out after a long week.

I'd felt like something was wrong that I couldn't just eat normally without being on a diet. And I was sick of always being on a diet....because none of those diets felt the least "intuitive."

I'd tried just eating and listening to my body.

But stress and fatigue after a long week sure could fool me into feeling hungry!

It was only after tracking my macros that I realized how proper macro ratios made me feel, which helped me begin to understand correct portion sizes AND even what and WHEN my body truly needed food.

And that is why I say tracking is so key! It will help you truly understand what you are eating and make sure you're guaranteed to get the results you deserve!

Plus, it literally takes minutes out of your day to track and log. Minutes as you avoid watching a commercial. Or sit bored at your desk.

It takes minutes!

If you aren't willing to commit mere MINUTES to your health, then you aren't going to get the results you want and are wasting your time reading this.

Because results do require you to make a change and commit 100% to that change. And that change means TRACKING.
So What Is The Macro CYCLING System?
I said keep it simple.

And I mean it.

But we also need to make sure to avoid hitting that dreaded weight loss plateau.

Nothing is worse than getting results for a week or two only to get completely and utterly stuck.

Talk about a motivation killer!

That is why CYCLING is so important.
Over time our bodies adapt and we do need to change things up to keep progressing.

BUT cycling too often just overcomplicates things WITHOUT providing us with a greater benefit.
